Killer Raccoons in Washinton

No, this isn't some political analogy. Its a weird story about raccoon gangs terrorizing a neighborhood in Olympia, Washington. Here's the story.

If you haven't ever seen a raccoon fight then you may not appreciate this story. Raccoons are typically quite timid, docile creatures. However, when cornered, they put up one hell of a fight. I guess they just got tired of waiting to be cornered and decided to take the to 'the other guy' first.

Where's all the wind?

Are we just that lucky? As of this April, all "experts" pointed to an active hurricane season. It is now late August and we have had...let me count 'em...three named storms. WOW, talk about a busy season. I'm amazed we can keep up.

These forecasts have now been revised and are lower than before.

Here are the respective forecasts.
April 4, 2006August 3, 2006
Named Storms1715
Hurricanes97
Intense Hurricanes53

There have been interim forecasts but August 3 represents the first change.

There is not much point here other than to ask the question. Why do we care what the forecasts is, and, if you do care, why do you care? Would you do things differently based on the forecast. If you are in the insurance industry, you might say you care because it helps you guage the effect of the season on your business. So, if you say that you care, my next question is this. How can you base your decisions on something that is more or less as wild ass guess?
